Italy is such a small country and yet, it’s famous all over the world for its food, architecture, culture, history and romance.
I don’t know about you but I love getting acquainted with the language of the country I visit. It opens a all new way to discover that particular place and it will make your stay even more fascinating.
I have been planning to write this post a while ago. It was inspired by my girlfriend who is learning Italian at the moment and one of my best friends who is fascinated by Italy.
If you are thinking to learn a new language and you still haven’t made up your mind about which one, here’s 4 reasons why you should pick up Italian.
Numero 1: connect with the Italian soul
Italy is the country with the largest number of cultural sites protected by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, simply known as UNESCO.
Italy’s soul is connected with its history, art and culture. From the remains of the Roman Empire to the stunning works of art of the Renaissance, from the natural beauties of the Cinque Terre and the grand canal of Venice, from the Uffizi’s museum of Florence and its Accademia Gallery to the Vatican museums.

You’ll never run out of places to visit and things to see in Italy. And while this is true for every country on Earth, Italy has a unique characteristic, la dolce vita.
Only by knowing Italian you’ll get to experience, in first person, what it feels like to live in Italy. You will be able to unlock its full potential!
Numero 2: Italian means musicality
The peculiarity of the Italian language lies in its musicality, its melodic and gentle being. Throughout the world, Italian is renowned as one of the most loved languages there is.
I think the best way to describe the feeling is through a song. One of my favorite, I still listen to it nowadays, is “Vivo per Lei, by Andrea Bocelli”.
Numero 3: Italian and its hand gestures
We Italians like to say that a gesture is more valuable than a thousand words. Surprisingly, we don’t actually have a gesture that says that, but we do for almost everything else. Therefore, hand gestures in Italy are very important and people use them in daily life to express a state of mind, a feeling and so much more. By knowing Italian, most of them would be much easier and you would be able to understand the logic behind them.
Numero 4: discover and understand food
If you have ever visited Italy or you’ve been to an upscale Italian restaurant in your city, you might have read some Italian words in the menu and have wondered their meaning. Of course, you know what you’re going to get if you order pesto pasta or lasagna. But did you know the arrabiata of the spaghetti arrabiata literally means angry? Basically, every visit to an Italian restaurant can become a language class!
