@nina.mclernon and I spent our last weeks in Carbondale, Illinois. It was such a good time, I experienced my first ever Thanksgiving and its meaning, hang out with family and friends and get connected to nature.
There’s something about time spent in nature that makes me feel much better. Whether it’s a quick stroll around the block to think through a problem or a weekend in the wilderness to clear my head, have you ever experienced a boost just from getting outdoors as well?
On a beautiful cold day, I asked Nina if she wanted to join me for a walk. “It doesn’t have to be long,” I said. “I just need to be outside and get some fresh air.” And so we walked. We didn’t walk long; we didn’t walk far, but our walk was just enough to deliver what we needed: a touch of nature. Being immersed in nature allows us to feel calm and grounded. It’s like hitting a “reset” button, bringing us back to “point one”, whatever “point one” may be. I always find that there’s an incredible relaxation that comes from stepping foot into nature; a feeling of serenity that is hard to be replicated by other activities.
Make time to step outside and walk through nature whenever you can. Let your mind wander along with your body, but make a point to pay attention to whatever pieces of life you may come across. Study the shape of a leaf or the sound of a gust of wind. Be silent and let yourself be calmed and free by the Earth beneath your feet.
