Key West, known as the Southernmost City, is an island in the Straits of Florida. My brother, my girlfriend and I spent three days in this sub tropical town.
The drive from Fort Lauderdale to Key West took about 3.5 hours and there’s some gorgeous scenery along the way including a 7 mile bridge. There is an airport in Key West so flying is also an option. However, if you consider to stop along the way to explore the other Keys, I recommend driving.
We had tons of good food, snorkeling in the ocean, went for a sunset sailing and enjoy the island life to the fullest. I posted a story of our three day trip on my instagram.
As I promised, here’s my highlight of our visit to Key West. Hope you enjoy it!
WHERE TO STAY
We stayed at the Key West Bed and Breakfast. The nice thing about Key West is that nothing is that far so you can get to everything fairly easily whenever you stay. The B&B is located in the William Russell House, which is 10 minutes walk from Duvall St, epicenter of restaurants, bars and local shops.
A soon as we got there, we were warmly welcomed by Cherry and Liz. They gave us a little tour of the house and showed us our bedroom. We loved the inside decor, really artsy, comfortable and clean.
On our first morning we grabbed their complimentary breakfast and sit outside in the patio. Every morning, from 8.30 to 10.30 am, you can enjoy a nice spread of fruit, homemade cake and much more.

WHERE TO EAT
There are so many places to eat in Key West. We tried to cover some of best ones in our opinion.
Date & Thyme – Healthy all the way! It’s a delicious and healthy place to start your day off. Market and Cafe, they focus on organic ingredients, with many vegan and vegetarian options. I love they only offer biodegradable drinking straws, it’s definitely a great way to protect the environment.
Half Shell Raw Bar – If you love seafood and happy hour. The restaurant is known for being a classic food destination on the island; right on the water, perfect for any occasion. The atmosphere is fun and it’s away from the fray of Duval St. Last but not least, they make a good key lime pie.
La Grignote Cafe – We had such a good breakfast here. It was one of the best savory croissants I had in a long time. My brother loved the Croissant Egg Benedict! They were filling and rich with ham and bacon. Everything is made out of scratch, so just look at the menu or ask the waiter for the dishes of the day.
Nine One Five – Bistrot Cuisine with attention to details. Although it’s located on bustling Duval Street, the restaurant feels like a world apart from the main tourist street. Housed inside a magnificent whitewashed Victorian home, the bistro has an Italian chef with a delightful menu.
Eaton Street Seafood Market – best lobster sandwich on the island. Located in historic Old Town Key West, the shop and eatery is housed inside a historic building that dates back to 1877.
Other good restaurants to be mentioned are Fisherman’s Cafè, Blue Heaven and BO’s Fish Wagon.
WHAT TO DO
Here is a round-up of some of our favorite activities on the island.
If walk around Key West you’ll see its beautiful architecture and quaint houses. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is definitely a place to check out.
Nature lovers will love the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. It’s a place where time stops and magic happens. Hundreds of butterflies will fly around you. Inside you will find also colorful birds ( if you can spot them ) and flamingos!
Aside from exploring the Neighborhood of Key West and wanting to take pictures of every bright colored house within ten feet, we did a few excursions that totally made the three days trip!
First, we did a catamaran champagne sunset sail, which was stunning! You don’t go too far off shore, but it’s absolutely worth it. They also offer beer, wine, Margaritas, Sangria and soft drinks.
We also had the opportunity to do snorkeling with Sebago Key West. The water wasn’t super clear that day but we had so much fun!
Key West is definitely a place to go back over and over. You can have fun and party on many of the bars on Duval St. or find peace at the beach or walking around the neighborhood.
Our time spent on the island was full of memories and it was hard to say goodbye. This was the second time for my girlfriend and I and first time for my brother. Can’t wait to go back and explore more!
This post was made it possible thanks to the collaboration with the Florida Keys Tourism and local restaurants such as Date&Time, Half Shell Raw Bar, La Grignote Cafè and Nine One Five.
