Portland, Maine is a beautiful coastal town that left me truly inspired after a long weekend visit. Its rich history, local cuisine, and stunning natural scenery are just some of the highlights that make this town a must-see destination. In this article, I will share my favorite experiences and recommendations to help you make the most of your visit to Portland.
Food, Best Lobster Rolls
First and foremost, the food scene in Portland is truly remarkable. The town is famous for its seafood and for good reason. The lobster rolls are a must-try, but you can also indulge in other local specialties like oysters, clams, and scallops.
I tried a few places and found one of the best lobster rolls this city has to offer.
Luke’s Lobster Portland Pier

Luke’s Lobster is a seafood restaurant chain that was founded in 2009 in New York City and has since expanded to several locations throughout the US, including one in Portland, Maine. They specialize in serving fresh, sustainably-sourced lobster, crab, and shrimp rolls. Not only do they have one of the best lobster rolls, in my opinion, but also have an outdoor deck and balcony that is dog friendly.

Bite Into Maine was founded by the husband-and-wife duo of Karl & Sarah Sutton back in 2011 as a 72-square-foot food cart This food truck is famous for its traditional Maine-style lobster rolls. They offer a variety of options, including a classic cold roll with mayo and a hot buttered roll with melted butter and lemon. Founded in 2002, the restaurant specializes in serving fresh, locally-sourced seafood, including Maine lobsters, clams, mussels, and oysters. It offers a classic lobster roll with a heaping portion of fresh lobster meat and just a touch of mayo. They have a really good wine and beer selection featuring local drafts, as well as live music. Enjoy your roll while taking in the stunning views of Casco Bay.
Portland has a vibrant coffee culture, with numerous specialty coffee shops scattered throughout the city. You will be surprised by the number of local coffee spots, artisanal bakeries, and pastries you will find here.
Now, to shorten the list for you, here are a few selections of my favorite coffee shops and bakeries during my weekend in Portland, Maine.
Coffee Shops

As you step through the doors of Tandem Coffee and Bakery, you are immediately greeted by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the scent of oven-fresh pastries. Buzz Coffee is a small shop that could be easily missed due to its curious location. It was recommended by a local friend and it lived up to its expectations! It has a very artsy and cool vibe with excellent service and music. If you find something you like while you wait for your coffee, you can purchase any art or piece of clothing in the coffee shop.
Pastry shops
Whether you’re in search of a morning treat, an afternoon indulgence, or a special dessert for a celebration, there is quite a list of pastry shops to choose from.

Local Shopping & Gifts
Another must-see in Portland is the historic Old Port district. This area is filled with charming brick buildings, quaint shops, and picturesque cobblestone streets. This is the perfect place to start your weekend and maybe do some shopping in one of the many boutique shops and galleries. I definitely recommend taking some time to check out Pottery Shop and Made in Maine Shop.

Things to Do
Stroll along the harbor and take in the beautiful views of the water, or take a sunset cruise to see the city from a different perspective.
If you’re a history buff, make sure to visit the Portland Head Light, which is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country. It offers stunning views of the coast and is a perfect spot for a picnic lunch. There’s a food truck, Bite Into Maine, close by the lighthouse that serves a really good lobster roll.
Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy in Portland. The Eastern Promenade offers a scenic walking trail with breathtaking views of Casco Bay. You can also take a ferry to nearby islands, such as Peaks Island or Chebeague Island, to explore the natural beauty of the area.
Finally, no trip to Portland is complete without a visit to one of the many local breweries. Maine is known for its craft beer scene, and there are over a dozen breweries in Portland alone. Take a tour and sample some of the local brews, or relax with a pint in one of the many cozy taprooms.
Overall, my weekend in Portland was a delightful experience that left me with fond memories and a desire to return. Whether you’re a foodie, history buff, nature lover, or beer enthusiast, there’s something for everyone in this charming coastal town. I highly recommend adding Portland to your travel bucket list.
